Improving our understanding of the processes underlying the spread of infectious diseases, increasing rates of emotional distress among college students, and even fluctuations in the abundance of wildlife populations lies at the intersection of data gathering, quantitative reasoning, and simulation modeling. With recent advances in remote sensing, cellular networks, and data sharing, it has become increasingly easy to gather and synthesize large amounts of relevant quantitative data. Unfortunately, effectively analyzing and integrating these large-scale data into ongoing policy and decision-making remains a difficulty in many aspects of our world, one that can only be alleviated with the proper application and continued advancement of statistical methodology.
