Fostering Mutual Understanding

Encountering Islam

About the Encountering Islam Initiative

The Encountering Islam initiative fosters mutual understanding and cooperation between Christians and Muslims. Emphasizing theological dialogue as a means of fostering interreligious appreciation and understanding, we sponsor opportunities to encounter one another through a variety of events.

We primarily focus on educational opportunities for the University of St. Thomas and wider community to learn more about Islam, and for theologians in both faiths to engage in theological exchange. Our events provide opportunities for students and the public to learn about Islam and/or Muslim-Christian Dialogue. Additionally, we aim to create teaching tools for St. Thomas faculty, and we collaborate with the Jay Phillips Center for Interreligious Studies to create programs aiding in Muslim-Christian relations.

Dialogues

Under the leadership of Dr. Terence Nichols and Dr. Adil Ozdemir, scholars were invited to write short commentaries on specific themes related to Muslim and Christian theology and spirituality.
