Dr. Tanya Gladney's research focus is on historical and contemporary inequalities within social institutions. Dr. Gladney currently works with local police departments by providing and assisting with Cultural Awareness and Implicit Bias Training.
Tanya Gladney, Ph.D. is an associate professor and law enforcement program coordinator at University of St. Thomas in the Sociology and Criminal Justice Department. Dr. Gladney teaches crime and sociology courses: Crime and Delinquency, Police and Society, Homicide, Seminar in Criminal Justice, Internship in Criminal Justice, Families in Italian Society (study abroad course in Italy), and Introduction to Sociology. Her primary research focus is on historical and contemporary inequalities within social institutions.
Dr. Gladney has a law enforcement and military background that includes 10 years of law enforcement experience with State Capital Police in Jackson, MS, and eight years with the United States Army Reserve. Dr. Gladney has provided Cultural Awareness Training with police departments for over seven years—primarily Saint Paul Police Department. Dr. Gladney currently works with local police departments by providing and assisting with Racial Equity and Implicit Bias Training. Additional work includes:
- Assisted the Minnesota Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Board with developing the Implicit Bias, Community Diversity, and Cultural Differences In-Service Learning Objectives for police departments. Required by the 2017 Minnesota legislature statute 626.8469
- Racial Equity and Implicit Bias workshops for Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA)
- Workshops and presentations to local and international groups on Racial Equity and Implicit Bias Training in law enforcement.
