The Center for MILES offers grants that help St. Thomas faculty create transformative, high-impact learning opportunities for students. Our goal is to empower students to explore diverse perspectives, bridge disciplinary boundaries and develop the intercultural knowledge and collaborative skills essential for leadership in a complex and interconnected world.

Academic Competitions and Bowls

Support for high-impact learning experiences that facilitate intercultural and/or interdisciplinary engagement. These grants provide support for student participation in academic bowls, scholarly competitions, case challenges, and other collaborative learning experiences that foster intellectual growth, teamwork, and professional development.

Eligibility: Faculty-led applications only. At least one of the instructors must hold a full-time faculty appointment in CAS. Funds will be granted to teams, not to individual students.

AY 2027-28

Connecting Worlds: Study Away and Study Abroad Experiences

Support for the faculty-led study away and study abroad programs in AY 2027-28 that provide students with immersive learning experiences and intercultural and/or interdisciplinary engagement. Funds will be granted to selected course(s) to help reduce program costs for students.

Eligibility: Faculty-led applications for CAS-based courses only. At least one of the instructors must hold a full-time faculty appointment in CAS.

Call for Proposals: Opens September 21, 2026

AY 2026-27 for AY 2027-28 courses

Collaborative Teaching Grants

Supporting faculty teams in bridging disciplines through collaborative course design.

Faculty stipends ($6,000 per team) awarded to teams of faculty (min of two faculty per team) to develop collaborative teaching experiences. Team-taught courses, paired courses, and other collaborative instructional models are encouraged.

The grant is intended to spark innovative partnerships that create meaningful learning opportunities for students and, ideally, grow into sustainable long-term experiences. Proposals should incorporate interdisciplinary and/or intercultural elements, and connect diverse perspectives, fields of study, or cultural contexts in ways that enrich student learning and engagement.

Eligibility: CAS-based courses only. At least one of the instructors must hold a full-time faculty appointment in CAS.

Emerging Ideas Grants for Faculty

The Center for MILES supports faculty initiatives that advance interdisciplinary and intercultural scholarship. Grants of up to $3,000 help launch new ideas, collaborations, and opportunities for impact.
