Popular Music Ensemble
Student groups receive individual coaching for small ensembles on the performance of all genres and types of American popular music.
The Department of Music, Film & Creative Enterprise at the University of St. Thomas is home to over 20 large and small performing ensembles. Many of our award-winning groups have appeared at state, regional, national and international music conferences. Our ensembles perform in a variety of venues including The Ordway, the O’Shaughnessy Auditorium in St. Paul and Orchestra Hall in downtown Minneapolis.
Taking pride in our innovative programming, St. Thomas ensembles have commissioned over 100 works by nationally recognized composers. Instrumental and choral ensembles perform with guest artists from around the country and abroad, and regularly appear on commercial recording labels.
Ensembles are open to all students. Some large ensembles require a placement hearing, which you can request below. All ensembles fit easily into a full-time class schedule.
A variety of small ensembles are offered for diverse musical genres and instruments such as digital music, guitar, piano, strings, flute, brass and winds. Contact musicandfilm@stthomas.edu for more information regarding these small ensembles.

Mac arrived at St. Thomas as a leader among his orchestra peers. He is going to be an inspiration to all his future students—they will be lucky to have him as their teacher! Some of Mac’s favorite memories are from times spent with his music peers while studying, performing and touring. He says, “One of the most important things to recognize is that everyone is on their own journey. Don't get caught up comparing yourself to the progress of others. If you want it, you'll get there, and you have your whole life to do it. Go at your own pace and discover lots of things along the way! Have fun!”
“I transferred to St. Thomas in 2018 to complete my Bachelor of Arts in Music. I always knew I wanted to be a teacher so I applied for my Masters of Arts in Teaching (Instrumental) program at St.Thomas. I was recently accepted this spring and I will be starting that program within the next year. In between my time off from school, I teach guitar lessons at Modern Day Music in West Saint Paul for students of all ages. I hope someday I can inspire students like I have been inspired by so many of the professors and faculty at St Thomas!” – Maggie Sorenson ‘20
Majoring in music business didn’t prevent Christian from presenting unique recitals. He was the first person to sing and play marimba not for just one, but two of his recitals! He traveled to the SXSW (South by Southwest) conference with the Music Industry Club, works at Paisley Park and produces music on the side. He recommends that students reach out and connect with others since there is always someone willing to help.
Belinda majored in computer science, music performance and French. Primarily a pianist, she performed in Festival Orchestra three times and participated in a quintet and piano duos. As a violist, she was involved with the Orchestra and quartets. While studying in Paris spring 2020, she studied and performed piano at the Ecole Normale de Musique. Encouraged by a songwriting class, Belinda self-wrote a vocal EP released in January 2020. She hopes to continue songwriting and piano in the future. After Delta Air Lines and General Mills internships, Belinda is now a software engineer for Target post-graduation.
